Nothing thrills me more than a concise, simple definition of incrementality. (I'm really fun at parties.) Our new Incrementality 101 hub opens with a crisp, 11-word definition: "Incrementality experiments show you what would have happened without your marketing." Couldn't have said it better myself. “A lot of people think about cash runway, but what matters more is emotional runway and you usually run out of emotional runway before you run out of cash runway." The concept of emotional runway was not something I’d heard of before interviewing Toby Kraus co-founder and CEO of Lightship for Not Another CEO Podcast. It was one of a number of thoughtful lessons shared from a first time founder with a huge vision. Toby’s career has been deeply intertwined with the electric vehicle revolution. From his time in finance and product management at Tesla (helping bring the Model S to market), to starting the technology business at Proterra to now leading Lightship, a company redefining the RV industry with the first all electric, aerodynamic, battery powered travel trailer built from the ground up. Here are some of my top takeaways from our conversation: Invest in the co-founder relationship early Toby and his co-founder Ben hired a co-founder coach in their very first week working together. Four years later, they are still meeting with her every few weeks, and he credits that decision as one of the best they have made. Understand the VC “hype cycle” Fundraising got harder as they progressed, despite more traction, because EVs fell out of favor in the venture world and complex hardware is rarely a down the fairway bet for most firms. Hire for authentic “why” In every interview, Toby asks why the candidate wants to work at Lightship. There is no right answer, but if it is not deeply personal and real, they will not thrive when the inevitable hard days come. Give up control to unlock growth As the team scaled to about 100 people, Toby learned to trust leaders to own their areas (even when their way was different from his) and this shift made the company stronger. Balance is a performance multiplier Building a hardware startup is intense, but Toby has learned that being intentional about time with family and self care makes him a better CEO. I really enjoyed the conversation with Toby both because of the lessons he shared but also because it gave me a chance to learn about a space that I know little/nothing about.
